This is one of the most inspirational books I have ever read! Ah, but I must confess, I actually listened through the audio book (which you can see below), rather than reading, as such. Nonetheless, Autobiography of a Yogi is the quintessential Eastern spiritual text written for Western eyes (and ears). It recounts Yogananda's life in India, where he met many great Masters, before moving to America in the 1930's to bring wisdom to a country in dire need. Some might ask how such a spiritual masterpiece could come from America of all places, icon of all things "Western", but this is precisely the point - the greatest Light goes where it is needed most and can do most good. That's us, folks.
Paramahansa Yogananda - Autobiography of a Yogi
As indicated above, this is the audio book, covering 15 CDs, convincingly brought to life by the voice of Sir Ben Kingsley (who you may remember for his award-winning film portrayal of Gandhi).
Paramahansa Yogananda - Autobiography of a Yogi
Sri Yukteswar was Yogananda's guru. This is the only book he wrote (that I'm aware of). It's short and very profound, especially for those who have an interest in Indian wisdom.
Swami Sri Yukteswar - Holy Science
Krishnamurti was just a teenager when he wrote this, but in reading it he seems to be a wise old sage (which, of course, is what his followers believed he was, in reincarnated form). Having spent years pondering the depths of Dr Ray's writings, many of his elusive statements became suddenly clear to me after reading At the Feet of the Master. I mark this one essential for those who are interested in the principles of Body Electronics.
Krishnamurti - At the Feet of the Master
To be honest, while I find this is still an insightful book, for me it lacks the brilliant simplicity and clarity of the earlier At the Feet of the Master, which is so inspired as to be a pretty tough act to follow.
Krishnamurti - Think on These Things
Cleverly illustrated, this book is rather useful for anyone who wants to understand the muscle and joint actions that occur in each posture and how to best work with the breath in that posture. Also, we know in Body Electronics that each muscle has a reflex action back to various organs and glands and here we have a book that shows exactly which muscle is being worked and in what way by each asana. This would help identify the yoga necessary to work on, based on other symptoms being experienced. I'd call that valuable and essential!
Leslie Kaminoff - Yoga Anatomy
Masaru Emoto's work is fascinating, so I've included every book here that I could find. As has been demonstrated by a number of researchers now, water has a memory. Emoto's contribution is these amazing photos of crystallised water, showing the symmetry of water that has been blessed or well treated (and I'm not talking about filtration, chlorination or fluoridation here) compared to the asymmetry and discord of water that has been cursed or improperly handled. Learn 100 ways that you can improve or destroy the quality of the water you drink or feed your garden with.
Masaru Emoto - Hidden Messages in Water
See what I've written above - the books in this series are fascinating.

Masaru Emoto - The Shape of Love: Discovering Who We Are, Where We Came From, and Where We're Going
I was fortunate to be awarded this book for winning top honours in my graduating class at naturopathic college. It's a weighty tome citing nothing but scientific research backing up the efficacy of herbal remedies. Perfect for those who prefer an "evidence-based" approach.
Braun & Cohen - Herbs and Natural Supplements: An Evidence Based Guide
Is it cheating if it's your wife's book? I hope not. Ruth Trickey is perfect if you're looking for a more scientific reference book for how a woman's body ticks. I wouldn't make this my only reading during or leading up to pregnancy (not that I personally could) because I believe a woman needs to be focussed on nurturing books, but it's excellent if you just need to know more.
Ruth Trickey - Women, Hormones and the Menstrual Cycle: Herbal and Medical Solutions from Adolescence to Menopause
Now this is a real technical book, really designed for herbalists and naturopathic students who are right into their pharmacology. This is no Mills and Boon (even though the authors' names look strikingly similar), but if you have a passion for herbs, you may love this book. And yes, also from my wife's collection.
Mills & Bone - Principles and Practice of Phytotherapy: Modern Herbal Medicine
Toni Jeffereys' Your Health At Risk was awesome. She pulls out scientific research, mostly from orthodox medical journals, to turn everything your doctor has been telling you on its head. The last 20 pages of this 300-odd page book are just the references! It's unfortunately not a pretty picture, especially if you know someone who has not survived cancer and so you could find the book making you quite angry. But on the other hand, for the great many who actually may be able to overcome it, this book could be what you're looking for.
Toni Jeffereys - Cancer Conspiracy: What You Must Know about the Worst Plague in Human History
This is one of my most frequently referenced books (probably in my top 3) when it comes to treating my own family. Kids respond so brilliantly to aromatherapy - colds, fevers, worms, indigestion, colic, etc. Worwood references handy remedies and essential oil recipes for hundreds of conditions. I've never known any remedy I've tried from her book to fail.
Valerie Ann Worwood - The Fragrant Pharmacy
Around 50 years old now, it's one of those books that just gets reprinted and reprinted because it's so simple and practical. Jarvis uses traditional round-the-home remedies like honey and cider vinegar for all sorts of common ailments - you could too.
DC Jarvis - Folk Medicine
